Anesthetic Monitoring

Anesthesic Procedures

Veterinary anesthesia plays an integral part of our daily procedures at Fox Run Equine Center.

Anesthesia is broken into three parts; Local, Regional and General anesthesia.

Local anesthesia is utilized when one must desensitize a localized area for diagnosis of pain, facilitation of minor surgical procedures, and relaxation of muscle groups.

Regional anesthesia is utilized for diagnosis of pain or lameness, to facilitate minor surgical procedures.

Generalized anesthesia is required for some minor surgical procedures, and most major surgical procedures.

Horses are maintained under anesthesia with either Isoflurane, Halothane or Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA).  The use of various anesthetics and methods allows individual treatment for each patient.  Electrocardiogram (EKG, ECG) and direct blood pressure monitoring are used in every case.  We also monitor blood gases intraoperatively, and each patient is maintained on a ventilator to ensure adequate respiration and oxygenation.
