Ophthalmology

Ophthalmic Disorders

Vision is extremely important to the horse.  Our facility performs ocular surgery and medical management of a variety of conditions afflicting equines.  These include:

  • Equine Recurrent Uveitis
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Ocular tumors and cysts
  • Keratitis (ulcers)

Our Board Certified clinician has a special interest in ophthalmology, and have had many success stories. It is important, however, to realize that ophthalmic diseases can progress very rapidly; it is usually an emergency.  We utilize plasma/serum and amnion to manage many of the more difficult cases, as well as placing subpalpebral lavage systems, to make treatment more manageable and comfortable for our patients.  Our surgeons perform keratectomy, amniotic placement, subscleral implant placement, vitrectomy, and phacoemsulsification (cataract removal).  Our various lasers may also be used in the treatment of certain ophthalmic disorders, such as tumors and cysts.
