Emergency Services

Fox Run Equine Center operates an emergency service with two veterinarians, an anesthetist, and at least one technician on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  We handle almost all emergencies including surgical colic, dystocia, and open fractures. We have state of the art equipment for major abdominal surgery including automatic stapling devices.  Our overall success rate on surgical colic is 68%, which is 18% higher than the national average.  Qualified surgeons and excellent post-operative nursing care contribute to our success rate. Substantial deposits are required for all surgical emergencies, particularly colic, but as with all of our charges, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and Care Credit, are accepted, along with personal checks.

We have 4 indoor ICU stalls equipped with overhead IV infusion systems and 24 hour nursing care available for critical care patients.  We also have an Anderson Sling for use at Fox Run Equine Center for recumbent horses.  We also offer emergency ambulatory services.

Clinical laboratory facilities at Fox Run include automated complete blood counts, complete blood chemistry panels, electrolytes, blood gas analysis, cytology, and urinalysis.  The laboratory is available for use by clinicians 24 hours a day for instant diagnostics and monitoring.

Fox Run Equine Center also maintains its own herd of blood donors on site for emergency whole blood transfusions.  They are hyper-immunized against salmonella endotoxin and botulism.  Plasma is collected on a regular basis and kept frozen for use in the hospital. A colostrum bank is also maintained.

Fox Run Equine Center maintains a good working relationship with some of the top specialists from both University and private practices.  These individuals are available for consultation on any Fox Run Equine Center case.  We feel it is very important for our veterinarians to learn and utilize the most up to date medical and surgical therapies available to veterinarians today.
